Our project reimagines toilets beyond human use, contributing actively to the urban ecosystem. In the bustling city of New York, pigeons and other birds are integral members of the environment. While they add character, their unregulated excretion poses challenges to urban infrastructure maintenance.
We propose a dedicated ‘pigeon toilet’—an architectural solution providing a structured space for avian waste management. This intervention mitigates the corrosive damage bird droppings inflict on buildings and public spaces.
The design incorporates the collection and processing of bird waste to extract valuable trace elements, which can be repurposed to support urban renewal efforts. By integrating this process, we aim to foster a sustainable, cyclic relationship between wildlife and city infrastructure. Our project redefines urban design to harmonize with all city inhabitants, enhancing both the functionality and resilience of urban spaces while promoting a balanced coexistence with nature.
